Numerical modelling tools for marine systems have developed at a brisk pace over the last decades. By the turn of the century they were already ‘’tools of the trade” in ocean studies and coastal zone management, as shown by the variety of models available today. Now, more than ever before, studies in most fields of marine sciences rely on process-oriented models as basic research tools. ​



Coastal areas have usually been the most populated regions in the planet, and it is estimated that more than 60% of the world’s population lives in these areas at present. Coastal regions are complex systems where conflictive interests surrounding the use and management of its resources are frequent.



This book brings together a wide range of ocean modelling applications based on MOHID to support research and coastal management. The MOHID model (www.mohid.com) is an open-source modelling system based at MARETEC, a research group at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Portugal. The MOHID community has more than 2000 registered users worldwide, and this volume illustrates the global reach of the model.



The primary focus of this book is on the unique role that numerical modelling has in the management of coastal areas. The chapters explore coastal processes across a range of spatial and temporal scales, and address common issues such as eutrophication and faecal pollution, but also more infrequent occurrences such as large-scale oil spills and tsunamis.
